CHAPTER 14

The sun was pleasantly warm as Katy turned into her street and walked the last few metres to her front door. She could hear the hum of one of the neighbours mowing the lawn and the delighted screams of children playing in the back garden of another house. Her phone buzzed rudely at her from inside her schoolbag, but for once she ignored it.

Probably another text from Jason Williamson, she thought. When will that guy take no for an answer?

She walked up her garden path, fished around in her bag for her keys and opened the front door. Delicious smells of cooking greeted her from the kitchen as she entered and she could hear her mum singing away to some terrible pop song from the nineties. She dropped her bag in the hallway, kicked off her shoes and went in.

“What’s for dinner?” she said.

Her mother turned from the stove with a raised eyebrow, wielding a wooden spoon. “Hi, Mum, how was your day?” she said sarcastically. “Oh, fine thanks, how was yours?”

Katy grinned and kissed Aelwen on the cheek. “Yeah, all of that too.” She studied the bubbling contents of the pot. “Yay, chilli!”

“Have we got nacho’s and dip?”

Katy jumped at the voice, spinning around to see her little brother sitting at the dining room table doing his homework. She watched him and frowned. For some reason she felt that Dylan shouldn’t be sitting just a few feet from her; he should be far away, very far away.

“What’re you looking at me like that for?” he said with a scowl.

“No reason,” she shrugged. “You’re just weird.” She walked over to him, the odd feeling that he was in the wrong place not leaving her. “What’re you doing?”

“Maths homework,” Dylan grumbled.

She let her fingers run through his hair, almost as if she needed to touch him to satisfy herself that Dylan was indeed here in their dining room.

Of course he’s here. Why wouldn’t he be here? So why can I feel him…

“I’m home!”

Katy looked up at her father’s voice in the hall, the sound of it filling her with a joy that she didn’t quite understand.

Why did I think I would never hear it again?

After a moment of scuffling with his boots he entered the kitchen with a grin.

“Something looks and smells delicious,” he said, pulling his wife towards him and giving her a kiss. “Dinner looks pretty good too.”

“Get off!” Aelwen said, giving Paul a slap on the arm. “You’re filthy!”

“It’s the way you like me.”

Paul leaned in for another kiss and Katy rolled her eyes despairingly.

“Get a room,” she shouted.

“Yes, a bathroom,” Aelwen said pushing Paul away. “Shower and change, quick sharpish, dinner’s almost ready.”

“Yes, dear,” Paul said, stepping into the dining room to kiss Katy and ruffle Dylan’s hair. “What’re you doing, buddy?”

“Maths homework,” Dylan grumbled, again.

“Oh, how very interesting,” Paul said with an exaggerated yawn.

Katy studied her father’s face, that feeling that she thought she would never see him again returning. Her hand reached up and gently touched his cheek.
